Sheriff Scott Stephens is the chief law enforcement officer in Union County. He was elected to his first four-year term in November, 2000, and is currently serving his third term. The Sheriff's Office operates multiple divisions and is responsible for the operations of the Union County Jail.

The Sheriff has a staff of 31 deputies assigned to either patrol, school resource officers, court services, civil service, and criminal investigations.

The Patrol Division has 13 deputies and provides security to the residents of the county around the clock. Each deputy is provided a late-model Crown Victoria cruiser, equipped with all the tools necessary to perform to the highest standards of law enforcement. All deputies are certified Georgia Peace Officers who received their training through the Georgia Public Safety Training Center.  All Deputies are required by the State of Georgia to undergo 20 hours of ongoing training each year.  Union County Sheriff’s Office requires, at minimum, an additional 20 hours of ongoing training.   In addition, all are CPR and First Aid trained to be able to respond quickly to any emergency situation.

The Jail Division maintains security at the jail and is specifically trained in the jail management procedures. They receive and process arrestees from the Georgia State Patrol, Blairsville Police Department, Union County Sheriff’s Office, and various other State and Regional law enforcement agencies.

The Criminal Investigations Division investigates crimes against persons and property. They also assist other agencies with crimes that are multi-jurisdictional, upon request.

The Court Services Division also transports inmates to and from court appearances and transfer them to other facilities when appropriate.

The Animal Control Division ensures that animals that are unattended or neglected are appropriately handled in the most humane fashion possible.
