Smoke Alarm Program
Smoke alarms save lives. However, they only save lives if they are in the home, working properly, and the occupants know how to escape. Having working smoke alarms and knowing how to escape are two major goals of Union County Fire Department’s Smoke Alarm Program.
Home furnishings today are made up of synthetic materials that generate dark, toxic gases when burning, making it impossible to breathe or see within a few moments. A person can get disoriented and overcome by this smoke. Smoke alarms alert occupants of a fire and give them more time to escape.
Our Smoke Alarm Program offers FREE smoke alarms to residents of Union County who are in need. The ultimate goal of the program is to have smoke alarms in every home of Union County. Union County Fire Department also installs FREE Carbon Monoxide (CO) monitors to residents who qualify and while supply lasts.
Residents of Union County can call the fire department or complete an online request form. The fire department will schedule a time to visit the home and install the free smoke alarms or Carbon Monoxide detectors. The resident’s only obligation will be to answer a few simple survey questions. When visiting a home, the occupants shall be given education material on smoke alarms, fire safety, escape plans, and Firewise.
Union County is a Firewise Community:
Brush, grass and forest fires don’t have to be disasters. NFPA’s Firewise Communities Program encourages local solutions for safety by involving homeowners in taking individual responsibility for preparing their homes from the risk of wildfire. Firewise is a key component of Fire Adapted Communities – a collaborative approach that connects all those who play a role in wildfire education, planning and action with comprehensive resources to help reduce risk.
The program is co-sponsored by the USDA Forest Service, the US Department of the Interior, and the National Association of State Foresters.
To save lives and property from wildfire, NFPA’s Firewise Communities program teaches people how to adapt to living with wildfire and encourages neighbors to work together and take action now to prevent losses. We all have a role to play in protecting ourselves and each other from the risk of wildfire.
CodeRED
Emergency Notification System
Union County Emergency Management Agency (UCEMA) utilizes the Community Notification System, CodeRED. CodeRED allows Union County to continue alerting residents and visitors of time-sensitive information, emergency and other urgent notifications. All Union County residents are strongly encouraged to go to the CodeRED Registration website and register to update your information.
The CodeRED system provides residents more flexibility in choosing which notifications and weather warnings they receive. The added feature of a mobile app for android and apple devices allow residents to choose up to 53 additional types of weather warnings. This app also allows the resident to view alerts from other counties across the United States that utilizes the CodeRED.
